Because of climatic and edaphic factors the establishment of luxuriant equatorial forest does not take place. The dominant vegetation on the islands is represented by\u00a0coconut palm forest associated with shrubland on the edge of the beach. On Magoodhoo Island,\u00a010 out of\u00a022 hectares are covered by coconut forest (<em>Cocus nucifera<\/em>) and shrubland is composed of sea lettuce (<em>Scaevola taccada<\/em>), tree hiliotrope (<em>Tournefortia argenta<\/em>), beach gardenia (<em>Guettarda speciosa<\/em>) and screw pine (<em>Pandanus sp.<\/em>).
