Social Environment
Faafu Atoll is composed of 23 islands with a population of about 4,600 inhabitants. According to the 2006 census data (more recent data is still under revision), Magoodhoo’s population amounts to 683 residents distributed on a limited surface (approximately 900 meters by 400 meters) and mostly concentrated in the island village. Since a large portion of the male residents are employed in activities such as fishing away from the island, sometimes for long periods, the female inhabitants represent the majority of the resident population in Magoodhoo. Besides housework, women are involved in a series of activities for their families and community: agricultural community planning, management of public spaces, preschool activities, organization of public events, conservation and repairing of fishing nets, and the production of handcrafts to be sold in the resorts (for example palm leaves are used to make roof mats).
