The Human Dimension of Biodiversity: A Visual Approach

The main purpose of the interdisciplinary MaRHE Center International Workshop is unpacking the
complexities of the human dimension of biodiversity. The main focus will be on environmental,
social and cultural characteristics of ecosystems’ changes in the Maldives. Particular attention will
be paid to national development and environmental policies with a specific lens on biodiversity
conservation regulations, on charismatic species’ role in heritage and biodiversity protection, on
visual approaches as a method of inquiry and storytelling.
The course is divided into a series of lectures and field activities coordinated by Italian researchers
and professors. Lessons are held at the Marine Research and High Education Center. All field
activities in the sea are carried out in snorkelling and it is not expected that students plunge with
diving equipment. It is strongly encouraged to bring individual cameras and underwater cameras
to carry out visual activities. In addition to providing a base of operations for laboratory research
activities in the Maldives, the MaRHE Center is open to any marine research or education
programs.
